Castles
© 2021 Susan Anders/Zanna Songs

I am a failed debutante
A private, quiet one
But I always get what I want
I get the job done
and I knew when I was six
That I’d be an architect
And the world said no
So I made it say yes

I don’t have a man or child
And I don’t really care
I don’t have that much to say
Some talk is wasted air
But bell towers, YMCAs, college halls, or grand entryways
Tell me I can build one and my heart will race

Mosaic pools, marble stairs
Sculpted arches everywhere
Let me keep working and I’m fulfilled
I got castles on my mind and they’re going to get built
Castles on my mind

Each new commission uses everything I have
I’ve got to breathe in the history, the needs, the land
And each room’s integrity is revealed like poetry
And when I do my job right the building changes me

Gold inlaid pools, spiral stairs
Tile and color everywhere
Let me keep working and I’m fulfilled
I got castles on my mind, oh and--

Carved wood beams, hidden stairs
Hand crafted ceilings everywhere
Let me keep working and I’m fulfilled
I got castles on my mind and they’re going to get built
Castles on my mind
